Cloning and repatriation don’t always guarantee an exact copy
Namely, to meet the ever-increasing demand for streaming content, creators on this side of the Atlantic are borrowing entire series from overseas. This year, 2024, France was the source of two major releases in North America, namely High Potential (a clone of the hit French series known as “HPI”) and now, with THE AGENCY 2024, a clone of Bureau Des Legends (one of the most popular French TV series of all time, which aired from 2015 to 2020). For example, many critics consider the new Western version of HPI, High Potential, to be a genuine improvement over the original.
But for now, so be it
Based on the first episode of Agency, this critic thinks the series should at least rival its iconic overseas counterpart. The writing is sharp, and Fassbender—another A-list movie star making the transition to the small screen—rarely disappoints. We assume that the main plot arcs will be changed to reflect the ever-changing political landscape.
